Generosity of Spirit and an Open Body?

The Lotus Hand Mudra symbolizes abundance and generosity of spirit.

A LESSON ON GENEROSITY OF SPIRIT!

Swami Rama once said that the body will only open up as much as the mind will open up.

 Interesting thought.

Yes, our attachment, even to our thoughts, can translate into rigidity in the body. There’s even some data to suggest that one of the things that prevents people from losing excess weight is because they are holding onto difficult emotions, painful memories, rigid ideas, old, even ancestral thought patterns.

So what about this idea of generosity?

True, it’s easy enough to clean out our closets and give our old clothes to Goodwill, but have you ever made a practice of giving away something that you love dearly and want to keep dearly?

Wayne Dyer tells a story of his life on the island of Maui, and he and one of his grown sons wore the same size tee shirt. His son came home one day with a beautiful surfer type tee shirt and Wayne said to him, “Wow! That’s beautiful!”. His son said, “Yes, I’ve been eyeing this tee shirt for some time and just knew I had to get it.” Wayne asked him if he could try it on and his son said yes. After Wayne put it on he said to his son, “Now it’s mine.” His son said, “No dad, you can’t have it because it’s mine.” Wayne told his son to practice generosity and allow him to keep it. And his son said, “Dad, you can have any other shirt of mine you want, but not this one.” Wayne said to his son, “I am not taking this shirt off until you can say you’re happy I have it.” And Wayne literally wore the shirt for a number of days, even sleeping in it, because he wanted to teach his son a lesson about true generosity, and being willing to give away things that you absolutely love. I don’t recall the exact details, but it took about a week or so and his son finally realized the lesson, and said, “Okay, Dad, it’s yours, and I’m happy you have it.”

Think about your own possessions – your prized possessions. Could you give them away to someone else?

Think about your habits, your patterns, your rituals. We are indeed creatures of habit. How often we find it difficult to let go of our way of doing things.

We become so attached to ways of doing things, our routine, attached to our ideas of “how things ought to be”. This insidious idea that things should be any other way than what they are.

So today I would invite you to consider something of an assignment – a continuation of yesterday’s letting go, and it may take some time to do this.

CHOOSE ONE OF THESE GENEROUS ACTIONS!

  1. CHOOSE ONE OF YOUR MATERIAL POSSESSIONS THAT YOU TRULY LOVE AND FIND SOMEONE YOU WILL GIVE IT TO. POST BELOW WHAT POSSESSION IT IS AND TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WHO YOU WISH TO GIVE IT TO AND WHY!

  2. CHOOSE ONE ASPECT OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE THAT YOU ARE TRULY ATTACHED TO, AND EITHER GIVE IT UP OR CHANGE IT IN SOME SUBSTANTIAL WAY!

  3. LET GO OF ONE ASSUMPTION YOU HAVE ABOUT A FAMILY MEMBER, YOUR PARTNER, OR A GOOD FRIEND THAT IS NEITHER HELPFUL FOR THEM OR FOR YOU!

*POST BELOW YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK, QUESTIONS, AND OPINIONS!!!!!
